5 Preface Looking back over the last year, one could be forgiven for feeling saddened, even hopeless. When will we ever learn? Surely re fl, ec ti ng on the past should help us to avoid the same mistakes in the present and so lay be tt er founda ti ons for the future. Yet there are s ti ll wars, almost on our doorsteps –, Ukraine and Russia, Israel and Pales ti ne. I grew up with the ever ‐, present threat of nuclear war. However, for most of my adult life that threat seemed to have receded, only to have raised its ugly head again in our days. May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord let his face shine on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord uncover his face to you and bring you peace. That is the blessing that is pronounced in the Mass for the Motherhood of Mary on January 1 every year, and this year is no excep ti on. Peace –, something for which we all yearn. Yet it seems to be beyond our grasp as human beings. Jesus reminds us: Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Real peace does not have its origins in this world, it is divine, of God. It is to the Prince of Peace that we must turn and beg for this great gi ft or as we are reminded by the Second Va ti can Council, …,.unless enmi ti es and hatred are put away and fi, rm, honest agreements concerning world peace are reached in the future, humanity, will perhaps be brought to that dismal hour in which it will experience no peace other than the dreadful peace of death. Peace is not merely the absence of war, nor can it be reduced solely to the maintenance of a balance of power between enemies …,. (Gaudium et Spes) Let the peoples praise you, O God, let all the peoples praise you. May God s ti ll give us his blessing ti ll the ends of the earth revere him. (Ps 66[67]) A great thank you to all who have made this publica ti on possible, those who have collated the informa ti on, those who have designed and printed it, those who have published it and caused it to be disseminated and all those who support it in any way. May the Lord reward them as only He knows how, and may He bless us all as we journey together with humble con fi, dence into 2024. Yours in blessed hope Bishop of Middlesbrough

Ordo Liturgical Ordo 74 THE ORDO THE ORDER TO BE OBSERVED IN THE PRAYING OF THE DIVINE OFFICE AND THE CELEBRATION OF MASS FOR THE YEAR OF OUR LORD 2024 INTRODUCTION The Calendar which follows combines the General Roman Calendar with the English Na ti onal Calendar and Middlesbrough Diocesan Supplements. Parishes should add to this their Titular Feast and the Anniversary of Dedica ti on or Consecra ti on. Both of these are celebrated as Solemni ti es. Should they coincide with Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, Easter Week or any other solemnity, they are transferred to the nearest free day. If it is considered pastorally bene fi, cial the Mass may be transferred to the nearest Sunday, provided this is an ordinary Sunday of the year. GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR THE CELEBRATION OF MASS AND DIVINE OFFICE SUNDAY The Sundays of Advent, Lent and Easter ti de are Solemni ti es. On these Sundays no other celebra ti on may replace that of the Sunday. The Sundays of Christmas ti de and Sundays in Ordinary Time are Feasts. These can be replaced by an occurring Solemnity. Sundays in Ordinary Time can also be replaced by Feasts of the Lord but by no other Feasts. On Sundays which are Feasts, the Mass of the Sunday may be replaced by a Funeral Mass or Ritual Mass, but other Masses may only be celebrated on the direc ti ons of, or with the permission of the Bishop. At Mass on Sundays there are three Readings, and the Gloria, except in Advent and Lent, and the Creed are said. The O ffi, ce starts with Evening Prayer I. The Te Deum is said, except in Lent. SOLEMNITIES MASS: Prayers, Readings and Preface are taken from the Proper or appropriate Common. Three Readings are used, and the Gloria and Creed are said. Except on Holy days of Obliga ti on, a Funeral Mass may be celebrated, but no other Mass may replace that of the Solemnity. OFFICE: The O ffi, ce is taken from the Proper or appropriate Common. It starts with Evening Prayer I. The Te Deum is said. At Midday Prayer the complementary Psalms are used, except on Sundays. Night Prayer a ft er Evening Prayer I and II of Sunday is used. FEASTS MASS: Prayers, Readings and Preface are taken from the Proper or appropriate Common. Two Readings are used except on Sundays. The Gloria is said, but the Creed only on Sundays. The Mass may be replaced by a Funeral Mass or ritual Mass but no other celebra ti on. OFFICE: The O ffi, ce is taken from the Proper or appropriate Common. Evening Prayer I is only said on Sundays. At Midday Prayer the Psalms of the day are said with the An ti phons of the Season or day. Night Prayer of the day is said. OBLIGATORY MEMORIALS MASS: The Opening Prayer is from the Proper or appropriate Common. If the other prayers are not proper, they may be taken from the Common or the Mass of the day. Unless at least one Reading is strictly Proper, the Readings of the Day are used. If no proper Preface is indicated, the Preface of the Season or of the weekday is used. A Mass of the Dead may replace that of the memoria, as soon as no ti ce of death is received, on the day of fi, nal burial and on the fi, rst anniversary. A Ritual Mass may be celebrated. Vo ti ve Masses may be only celebrated for excep ti onal pastoral reasons. OFFICE: If any part of the O ffi, ce is proper, then this is said. If not proper, the concluding prayer at O ffi, ce of Readings, Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer is taken from the Common, the Invitatory An ti phon and at Morning and Evening Prayer, the Hymn, Reading, Short Responsory, Benedictus/ Magni fi, cat An ti phons and Intercessions from either the Common or the O ffi, ce of the Day, and remainder from the O ffi, ce of the Day. OPTIONAL MEMORIALS Op ti onal Memorials should only be celebrated when there is genuine local devo ti on. It is not correct to celebrate all or even most of op ti onal memorias. When celebrated, they are celebrated in the same way as obligatory memorias.

Ordo Liturgical Ordo 75 MEMORIALS DURING PRIVILEGED SEASONS Memorias are not celebrated during Holy Week or Easter Week. During Lent, between 17th and 24th December and during the Octave of Christmas, all Memorias are op ti onal. If celebrated, they are celebrated in the following way: MASS: The Collect of the Memoria is said. The rest is of the Mass of the day. OFFICE: In the O ffi, ce of Readings the Reading of the Memoria is added as a third Reading, followed by its responsory and the concluding prayer of the Memoria. At Morning and Evening Prayer, the An ti phon and concluding Prayer of the Memoria may be added a ft er the concluding prayer of the day. WEEKDAYS ADVENT, CHRISTMASTIDE, LENT AND EASTERTIDE A Proper Mass is provided for each weekday during these seasons, and this should be used on all ordinary weekdays. The Mass of the day may only be replaced under same circumstances as the Mass of an Obligatory Memoria (see above). In the O ffi, ce, the Psalms are taken from the four ‐, week Psalter, the rest from the Proper of Seasons. ORDINARY WEEKDAYS The Prayers at Mass may be taken from ANY Sunday of the Year, not just the previous Sunday or from a Vo ti ve Mass or one of the Masses for Various Needs and Occasions. Vo ti ve Masses, including Masses for the Dead may be celebrated, but these should be used sparingly. In par ti cular the weekday Readings should not be omi tt ed too frequently or without good reason. When it is necessary to omit the weekday readings during a par ti cular week, on account of some par ti cular celebra ti on, it is permissible to either combine parts omi tt ed with other readings or to decide which readings are to be given preference over others. THE LECTIONARY In the Lec ti onary the SUNDAY READINGS for 2024, commencing on the First Sunday of Advent 2023 are taken from YEAR B THE WEEKDAY READINGS, commencing on TUESDAY 9 th JANUARY, 2024, are taken from YEAR 2. EUCHARISTIC PRAYERS There is always a choice to be made as to which Eucharis ti c Prayer and Preface is to be used. A helpful explana ti on may be found in the `Le tt er on Eucharis ti c Prayers` ‐, contained in `Va ti can II Documents` edited by Flannery pp 233 ‐, 240. EUCHARISTIC PRAYER I has special `communicantes` which highlight the major feast or rite being celebrated. EUCHARISTIC PRAYERS I, II and III may be used with any Preface. However, Eucharis ti c Prayer II has its own Preface, and this may be used even when there is a seasonal Preface. EUCHARISTIC PRAYER IV may not be used on Feasts with their own Preface, nor may another Preface be used. The reason for this is that Eucharis ti c Prayer IV is modelled on the Eastern tradi ti on which has irreplaceable Prefaces. Unlike the other Prefaces which end with the Praise of Angels and Saints for Redemp ti on in Christ, the Preface of Eucharis ti c Prayer IV is in praise of God Himself ‐, Jesus Christ not being men ti oned un ti l a ft er the Sanctus. The EUCHARISTIC PRAYERS for MASSES OF RECONCILIATION may be used especially as Masses with a Unity, Peace, and Peniten ti al theme. MASS FOR THE PEOPLE The obliga ti on of Missa pro Populo applies on Sundays and Holydays of Obliga ti on. DAYS OF SPECIAL PRAYER APPOINTED BY THE BISHOPS` CONFERENCE Jan 14 For Peace Jan 18 ‐, 25 Week of Prayer For Chris ti an Unity Jan 21 One Mass Permi tt ed for Chris ti an Unity Jan 21 Sunday of the Word of God Jan 28 Racial Jus ti ce Day Feb 8 For Vic ti ms of Tra ffi, cking Feb 11 World Day of Prayer for the Sick Feb 11 For the Unemployed Feb 14 For Europe Feb 18 For candidates for the sacraments ‐, every Sunday in Lent Feb 23 For the Needy &, Hungry of the world.
