BISHOP DAVID’,S COAT OF ARMS THE SHIELD The shield shows two coats of arms impaled, that is, placed alongside each other. On the left as one looks at the shield are the arms of the diocese of Northampton showing three fl,eurs,de,lis in the ‘,chief’, or top of the shield, with three choughs in the base. The fl,eurs, de,lis are to signify Our Lady and the three birds are taken from the arms borne by, or attributed to, St Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury from 1162,1170. On the right as one looks at the shield are the arms of Bishop David Oakley. In the ‘,chief’, or top of the shield is the cross of St Chad, patron saint of the Archdiocese of Birmingham where his relics are enshrined in the Metropolitan Cathedral and where Bishop David served as a Canon in the Metropolitan Chapter. Beneath the cross is a lion rampant signifying the Lion of the tribe of Judah, King David’,s house and line from which was born the Messiah. It is a reference to Bishop David’,s own name as is the green ‘,fi,eld’, or base colour behind the cross and the lion: the latter part of the name Oakley can mean a meadow, a fi,eld, or a clearing in a wood. GALERO The hat that ensigns the arms is a galero, the medieval headgear of a bishop and it is shown with twelve tassels and in green, signifying a bishop. PROCESSIONAL CROSS Behind the shield is displayed a processional cross signifying the bishop’,s rank. MOTTO Bishop David chose as his motto Beati Pauperes Spiritu ‘,Blessed are the poor in spirit’,. The Beatitudes defi,ne our relationship with Jesus Christ and also the way we live in relationship with the world around us as disciples of the Lord. The coat of arms of Bishop David Oakley was designed with the help and assistance of Fr Edmund Montgomery, a priest of the diocese of Shrewsbury, and conforms to the directive of the Secretariat of State of the Holy See, Ut Sive Sollicite of 1969 ‘,On the Dress, Titles, and Coats of Arms of Cardinals, Bishops and Lesser Prelates’,. Foreword My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Twelve months ago, the papal nuncio informed me of my nomination as Bishop of Northampton by Pope Francis, in succession to Bishop Peter Doyle. These words begin with a sincere expression of my deep appreciation of Bishop Peter and our gratitude for all th e many pastoral gifts with which he served the Diocese so generously. After my appointment, it was necessary to choose an episcopal motto. Truly, the words of Jesus, Blessed are the poor in spirit, chose me and proved to be somewhat prophetic. We did not appreciate what lay ahead of us during 2020. Poverty of spirit has been the best way to approach the lockdown which took place a few days after my episcopal ordination in response to the pandemic. We had to approach these months with an openness of heart, somewhat powerless against the force of COVID - 19. There was much encouragement from around the Diocese for me, and for this I give thanks to the good Lord. It was heartening to hear the news of communities and individuals, lay faithful, religious and clerg y, seeking ways to share online liturgy, spirituality, catechesis. Many communities found ways to serve those who were in need. These are signs of faith life, lived out in imaginative ways. Please God, the pandemic will be defeated during this coming year . Like a people emerging after the devastation of a war, we will come out of our bunkers, blink and breathe, finding ways to renew our discipleship. There will be challenges for sure. Resources are increasingly stretched and we will have to cut our cloth a ccordingly. At the same time, we can walk with confidence and trust. This Directory tells the story of a people striving to build God’,s Kingdom, and they can do so knowing the power of the Spirit is at work amongst them. Your devotedly in Christ, Bishop of Northampton 5

THE DIOCESE –, A BRIEF HISTORY The Catholic Faith first came to Britain in Roman times. St Alban, our first martyr, probably suffered in the year A.D. 209. Three bishops from Britain attended the Council at Arles in A.D. 314. In 597 St Augustine came from Rome to convert the pagan Angle s, Saxons and Jutes who had invaded and settled in Britain after the departure of the Romans. His work of conversion was concentrated largely in the kingdoms of Kent and Essex. It was not until some thirty - eight years later that the area covered by our pre sent diocese received the Christian message, with the arrival of the missionary St Birinus and the foundation of his see at Dorchester on Thames in 636. But the real evangelization of the people who dwelt in our district, the Middle Angles, was achieved th rough the labours of missionaries from the isle of Lindisfarne, off the Northumbrian coast. Notable among them was St Chad, whose see, established at Lichfield in 669, included the present diocese of Northampton. A few years later, to meet local needs, Archbishop Theodore of Canterbury divided the Mercian see of Lichfield and founded the diocese of Leicester for the Middle Angles. There it remained until the ninth century when the disruption of the Scandinavian invasions necessitated its transfere nce to the safer original site at Dorchester on Thames. With a major reorgani s ation of the diocesan system in the Norman period, the ancient see of Dorchester was brought to an end. In 1072, Remigius, its last bishop, was translated to Lincoln, in which ju risdiction the territory of the present diocese remained for many centuries. From the time of the Reformation until 1850, Catholic Dioceses ceased to exist in Britain. As a result of heroic sacrifice by clergy and laity alike the Faith remained alive and f rom 1685 to 1850 was governed by Vicars Apostolic, who reported to the Cardinal Prefect of the Roman Congregation of Propaganda Fidei . On 29 September 1850 by Letters Apostolic, issued by Pope Pius IX, the English Hierarchy was restored, and the diocese of Northampton came into being. On 13 March 1976, by the decree Quod Ecumenicum, Pope Paul Vl formed the diocese of East Anglia for the Counties of Cambridge, Norfolk and Suffolk. The territory left to the diocese of Northampton covers Bedfordshire, the old county of Buckinghamshire including the Slough area, and Northamptonshire. Diocese 7

Daniel Rooke 26th September 2020 Daniel was born in Bedford in 1992 and is the youngest of three brothers. He attended three Catholic schools in Bedford, St Joseph’,s Lower, St Gregory`s Middle, and St Thomas More Upper School. Daniel loved drama and took part in many productions while at school. He was a very active member of the AMDG youth group at Holy Child and St Joseph`s Church in Bedford. After leaving school Daniel went to study at The University of Wales, Trinity St David in Lampeter. His course was a joint honours degree in Ancient History and Classical Studies. While at University he felt compelled to explore his Catholic faith and fell more deeply in love with God and Holy Mother Church. He then began to discern a priestly vocation. After leaving University In 2014 Daniel was delighted to be accepted for priestly formation by Bishop Emeritus Peter Doyle who sent him to St Mary`s College Oscott. for further studies. During his six years of study and discernment Daniel was engaged in a variety of activities including being a member of The Scola, Pro Life group and street ministry. Following his ordination, Daniel has now been appointed Assistant Priest to Fr Jonathan Hill at St Augustine Church in High Wycombe and he is also to join the chaplaincy team at HMP Aylesbury. He entrusts his priesthood and future ministry to the care of the Blessed Virgin Mary. ORDINATION TO THE PRIESTHOOD 83

Bishop Patrick Leo McCartie Patrick Leo McCartie was born in West Hartlepool on the 5th September 1925, the son of Patrick Leo and Hannah McCartie. He studied for the priesthood at St Mary’,s College, Oscott and was ordained priest on the 17th July 1949 at St Teresa’,s, Trent Vale, Staff, ordshire. He spent a year as an assistant priest at St Chad’,s Cathedral, followed by six years on the teaching staff, at Cotton College and as assistant priest in St Wilfrid’,s, Cotton. After relatively short spells as an assistant priest in parishes in Birmingham, Wolverhampton and then Wednesbury, he was made the Diocesan Inspector of Schools in 1962. This post he held until 1968 when he was made the Administrator of St Chad’,s Cathedral. On the 13th April 1977 he was appointed as an Auxiliary Bishop of Birmingham and Titular Bishop of Elmham by Pope Paul VI. He was ordained bishop by Archbishop George Patrick Dwyer on the 20th May 1977. On the 20th February 1990, Bishop McCartie was appointed as the tenth Bishop of Northampton by Pope John Paul II. He was installed in the Cathedral Church of Our Lady and St Thomas, Northampton on the 19th March 1990 by Cardinal George Basil Hume. The Cardinal spoke of Bishop Leo coming to the Diocese in his ‘,autumn years’,. Indeed, when he was interviewed by the local press, the suggestion was made that he was ‘,a bit old’, to be put in charge of a diocese. Bishop Leo retorted that if he had been made the Bishop Rome, he would have been considered ‘,too young’,! During his years in Northampton he fostered priestly vocations and showed a fatherly care for the priests of the Diocese. He promoted the permanent diaconate and built on the legacy of encouraging vocations to the permanent diaconate which he had inherited from his predecessors. He was also very supportive of Anglican clergymen who sought to be ordained in the Catholic Church after the Church of England admitted women to the priesthood. For many years he served on the National Panel of the Bishops’, Conference of England and Wales which had the task of scrutinising and judging the applications for ordination of many ex‐,Anglican clergy. At the Bishops’, Conference level, Bishop McCartie served as the President of the Racial Justice Commission and for many years was the Co‐,Chair of the Methodist/Roman Catholic National dialogue. Ecumenism was also one of his strengths in the Diocese of Northampton. In the new town of Milton Keynes, he worked closely with other Church leaders and was fully supportive of the proposal to build a new City Centre Church, Christ the Cornerstone, which was opened in 1991. The Church had the participation of the fi,ve major denominations and in March 1992, in the presence of Her Majesty, the Queen, was offi, cially dedicated with the sermon preached by Cardinal Hume. Bishop McCartie was always supportive of Catholic education and he enlivened parish and Diocesan life with his enthusiastic support of Diocesan, Deanery and Parish Councils. In 1999, under his watchful care, the Cathedral in Northampton was extensively re‐,ordered. Bishop McCartie submitted his resignation to the Pope in September 2000 and on the 29th March 2001 his successor Archbishop Kevin McDonald was appointed. His retirement years were spent fi,rstly at Aston Hall, Staff, ordshire where he helped out in the local church and enjoyed the company of his devoted sister Kathleen. Her unexpected death in 2012 left the Bishop feeling bereft and with declining health he moved to the Little Sister of the Poor at Harborne where he received devoted and loving care. In 2019 on the 17th July, he celebrated 70 years of priestly ministry surrounded by bishops, priests, family and friends and his community at St Joseph’,s Home. He died on the 23rd April 2020. May he rest in peace. Bishop Leo was buried in the parish cemetery at Great Billing, just outside Northampton, on the 12th May 2020. His Requiem Mass was a simple aff,air because of the Covid 19 lockdown. Bishop Leo was a kind man and a true and faithful servant of the Church. May he have the reward of his labours. Canon Michael Edward Hazell Michael, or as he was known by his fellow priests, Mick, and by his family, Mike, was born on 21st October1933 to Beatrice and James Hazell. He was the eldest of fi,ve siblings, Molly, John, Peter and Ann. Michael was a weekly boarder at Oak Hill before moving on to Birkfi, eld in Ipswich. Encouraged by the then Fr John Thompson (subsequently Canon), his parish priest, Michael then went to Ushaw College in 1949 to study for the priesthood. He was ordained in July 1958 at his home Parish of St Thomas of Canterbury in Woodbridge by Bishop Leo Parker, Bishop of Northampton, whose Diocese then embraced East Anglia, subsequently split off, as a separate Diocese. After an initial spell as assistant priest at Walsingham, Michael was appointed Bishop’,s Secretary, fi,rstly, in 1961, to Bishop Parker and subsequently to Bishop Charles Grant. In 1967 he was appointed Parish priest of The Good Shepherd in Huntington and then moved to St Anthony’,s in Farnham Royal in the Slough Deanery. From 1974 to 1979 Michael was based at the Cathedral in Northampton as Administrator. From there he moved to The Most Holy Name of Jesus Parish in Oundle, returning to St Anthony’,s Farnham Royal two years later. His fi,nal move before retirement to his native Suff, olk was to Stella Maris, a Pastoral Centre in the grounds of St Bernard’,s Convent in Slough, where he was Vicar for Clergy, providing pastoral care for both active and retired priests of the Diocese. This involved covering for parish priests who were sick also assisting retired priests with their accommodation and medical care. In 2003 he was appointed Provost of the Diocese, a post he held until retirement in 2005. In retirement, while he greatly enjoyed being near to his close family, he not only continued to serve his parish but took on responsibilities for seafarers at Felixstowe Docks. A quotation from his brother illustrates something of Michael’,s character: “,Mike was a selfl, ess man, shown not only by his vocation but also by his beloved boat. Moved by the plight of the Ethiopian famine he sold his much loved boat in the mid‐,1980s, the proceeds being donated to support the famine –, a typically selfl, ess act.”, His love of Ireland and his care for his fellow priests frequently led him to provide cover for them as well as to visit sick and retired priests who had returned to their country of origin. In May 2018 Michael was diagnosed with Hodgkin’,s lymphoma. His acceptance of this was heroic and did not stop him from celebrating his 60th Jubilee of Priesthood and making the journey to Northampton for the Jubilarians’, celebration with others who had reached various milestones in the same year. He continued saying mass for most of the last two years until he fi,nally agreed to stop treatment and gradually progressed to his death. Michael, a deeply spiritual servant of the Church, was very well loved by all who knew him, many of whom kept in touch with him to the end. He was for me personally a great support in progress to and after ordination. An abiding memory was of his saying each eucharistic prayer, all by heart and giving a real feeling of his true holiness. May he rest in eternal peace. Paul Lipscomb Obituaries 85

Fr Joseph Pham Mary Joseph Pham Ngoc Dung was born on the 25th January 1957 at Hoi‐,An City, Quang‐,Nam province, Vietnam. He was born into a very good Catholic family of twelve children. From a very early age he showed a desire to be a priest and he studied in two seminaries in Saigon before entering the postulancy of the Salesian Fathers. His studies were interrupted by the war in Vietnam and, for a time, he was forced to work with a Communist youth movement. Eventually, he and his parents and other members of the family were allowed to leave Vietnam for Sweden. Joseph hoped that this move would allow him to continue his studies for the priesthood. He left Vietnam with the blessing of his superiors and his spiritual director. After sometime, he was accepted as a student for the Diocese and studied at St Mary’,s College, Oscott. He was ordained on the 15th September 2001 by Bishop Kevin McDonald, his former Rector, at the Church of St Anthony Of Padua, Farnham Royal. Fr Joseph served in Bletchley and at the Cathedral before being appointed to Our Lady of Lourdes, Aylesbury in 2005. This was the beginning of a long and happy association with the parish. Fr Joseph was a zealous and committed pastor and his simple but heartfelt spirituality was an encouragement to many. Fr Joseph had been through so much –, forced indoctrination, fl,eeing to a diff, erent country, struggling to be ordained through the medium of a diff, erent language and a diff, erent expression of the Church here in the west, but in Bedgrove, the immense joy he felt in being a priest of Jesus Christ was so evident. In 2012 he moved to St Anthony’,s, Farnham Royal and he attempted to develop the spiritual life of the parish. It soon became clear as Bishop Peter said in his statement to the parish that ‘,the complexities of the parish need the skills and expertise of a more experienced pastor’,. Fr Joseph was given a short sabbatical but before he was able to take up a new appointment, he suff, ered a dramatic and unexpected deterioration in his own health. A long period of hospitalisation and recuperation followed and he was lovingly cared for by many former parishioners, especially Bella Galeno. He managed one fi,nal trip back to Vietnam before the seriousness of his condition demanded constant nursing care. He died on the 26th February 2020 in Milton Keynes General Hospital. His funeral took place on the 14th March in the church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Aylesbury, with Bishop Peter presiding –, one of his last acts as Bishop of Northampton. Many members of his large and supportive family were present along with many members of the Vietnamese community. Fr Joseph had known many struggles in his life and priesthood but the presence at his funeral of so many family, friends and parishioners, was a true expression of how much he was loved and how he encouraged so many by his radiant smile, his pastoral zeal and his love for the priesthood. May he rest in peace. Mgr Seá,n Healy Obituaries 86

Deacon Frank Shephard Frank was born in 1925 and was educated at St Joseph’,s Christian Brothers College, Beulah Hill, West Norwood, in South London. After School he was conscripted into the Royal Engineers and, luckily for him, spent his Army Service in a Drawing Offi,ce at the War Offi,ce. As he said himself “,my mates, were less fortunate and were all sent to Burma!”, After his demobilisation, Frank trained in a small private fi,rm and after qualifying as a Chartered Surveyor, worked for short time for the Corporation of London, before moving on to Charringtons, the brewery company. By this time, he was married to a Glaswegian girl, Veronica (who was always known as Vera) whom he met at a Parish dance in Addiscombe, she, having moved to the same area from her native Scotland. She was, he said “,very worried because he worked for a company which made beer!”, After Charringtons, he joined Express Dairies, which was absorbed by Grand Metropolitan, the hotel group, which was itself subsequently taken over by Diagio, fi,nding himself once more involved with the Demon Drink! He took early retirement in 1985 and moved to Stoke Poges and joined the Parish of St Anthony’,s in 1971. Frank had been Chairman of the Parish Council in Barnet as well as being Past Grand Knight of Council 560 of the Knights of St. Columba. When Canon Hazell, the then Parish Priest, discovered this he asked Frank to form and chair a new Parish Council at St Anthony’,s This used to meet at the then presbytery ‘,Shepherd’,s Hey’,, now the Doctor’,s house at the end of the drive Having always been a keen churchman, Frank, was appointed Governor at St Anthony’,s and St Joseph’,s schools and became Chair of both Boards. He later retired from the Board of St Anthony’,s, handing the chair over to Mike Robinson, but he continued with St. Joseph’,s until he had completed an amazing 22 years in the post. Having, meanwhile, turned his attention to further religious studies he was encouraged by Canon Hazell to train for the Permanent Diaconate. Sadly, in 1989, soon after commencing his training for the Diaconate under the late Monsignor Gerald Moorcroft, Frank and his wife were involved in a serious car accident, which resulted in Vera’,s death. After refl, ection, he decided to continue his training. He was Ordained Deacon in 1991 by Bishop Leo McCartie and continued in this role until his death. Frank supervised building work at both schools, as well as of the new Parish Presbytery and oversaw various church renovations. Frank provided altar wine for the Parish, made from grapes from his own vines. He was very active in Parish life, being, amongst other things a founder member of prayer group. Frank was a kind, gentle, caring and considerate man and a good friend, who never complained but was always ready to listen to the problems of others. He was an example to all and an outstanding follower of Christ. Frank died on 7th December 2019. Deacon Paul Lipscomb Obituaries 87

The Shrine of the Relic Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe The Shrine was established on 29 th September 2012 by Bishop Peter Doyle in the Church of the Holy Child and St Joseph, Bedford . The Relic Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, one of only 220 in the world commissioned by Pope Saint John Paul II, had travelled on pilgrimage throughout England. The enthusiasm and devotion shown by the Northa mpton Diocese led Archbishop Vincent Nichols to ask Bishop Peter Doyle to provide a permanent home for the Relic Image. The Archbishop requested that the Relic Image would continue to visit parish churches, cathedrals, religious institutions and Catholic s chools. To that end there is an annual programme of Pilgrimage each year and a Shrine programme. Our aim is to share the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe, to promote prayer and to witness to the truth of the Gospel and the sanctity of life. The Knights of St Columba have also partnered with the Guardians in a national agreement to offer invaluable support in assisting with pilgrims and visits all over the country. The Shrine can be visited currently every day between 10.00am - 5.00pm but please check with the website www.relicourladyofguadalupe.co.uk as the Relic Image may be away on pilgrimage. The Shrine Rector is Canon Seamus Keenan. The Shrine Co ordinator, Mrs Donna Gardner, can be contacted on 07940 228227. ‘,The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe will be the centre from which the light of the gospel of Christ will illuminate the entire world by the means of distribution of the miraculous image of His mother.’, Pope Saint John Paul II –, Guadalupe 1979 89
