St Mary’,s Parish Derby were delighted to welcome the Yr 6 pupils from St Mary’,s CV Academy to the celebration Mass. Fr Taz Lasola blessed candles for all the parishioners, including battery candles for the children, which they very much appreciated and were allowed to keep. The Feast also coincides with the traditional end of the Christmas season, so the children enjoyed one last look at the nativity figures before they were put away until next year.”, Francis Hazel

The Catholic News. March 2022 Page 5 170mm x 4 to fill Derby Deanery Begins Sensory Relaxed Masses as a Response to the Synod The Synod has been a source of many discussions in our parishes and schools, and St Mary’,s Catholic Voluntary Academy Derby were delighted when one of their suggestions was taken up by the deanery. The Year 6 Synod Reps were looking for ways to reach out to those who might feel excluded in our Masses, and they quickly identified special needs children as such a group. Having certain sensory needs can sometimes make attending a typical parish Mass challenging for both children and parents and carers. The Yr 6 children saw all the support that is put in place for children with extra needs in a school setting and wondered why this couldn’,t happen in a parish. The School’,s lay chaplains, Fran Hazel and Joel Bryan, were thrilled when Fr David Cain offered to help. The first Movement and Sensory Space Mass took place at The Church On Oakwood on Sunday 30th January - it was a great success, with around 60 people attending. St Joseph’,s Parish Choir led the music, members of The Briars Team attended and read, and they had more brownies than they could count - huge thanks to the cake makers. This will now be a monthly event, the next one is on Sunday 27th February at 2pm at The Church On Oakwood, Bishops Drive, Derby DE21 2DF, Fr Jonathan Cotton will be the celebrant. Everyone is welcome. For more information contact Fran Hazel fran@brightshark.co.uk Francis Hazel

We are particularly pleased to be able to bring a unique One Woman Show to the Cathedral Hall on Saturday March 12th 7.30 (entrance via the gate and not through Cathedral) Following many performances in London and the South-east as well as at the Bury, Watford, Bloomsbury and Edinburgh Fringe festivals, actress Alexis Leighton and Wirral- born musician and writer Helen Tierney are thrilled to bring MRS SHAW HERSELF to the Nottingham Irish Festival. This Shaw Society-acclaimed production is the first time the life and thoughts of Charlotte Payne-Townshend (aka Mrs George Bernard Shaw) have been presented on stage in her own words. Charlotte Payne-Townshend was married to one of the most famous men in the world . Irish heiress, Fabian, suffrage supporter, LSE benefactor and champion of women’,s rights, her legacy until now has been largely neglected. This hour-long show brings her life and achievements into the spotlight and explores this very unconventional Irish love-story with live accompaniment on Celtic harp. Helen Tierney from Bebington, who attended Wirral Grammar Girls school, co-devised the show with Alexis and is very excited to be a part of the Festival. “, Charlotte’,s story is really worth celebrating too, so it is a great time to bring him out of her shadow..”, Gerry Molumby - Producer Nottingham Irish Festival 2022 Nottingham St Patrick`s Festival

Page 10 The Catholic News. March 2022 The autobiography Catholic folk legend Vin Garbutt wrote in his final years has been reprinted three times after reaching the number one slot on Amazon. Book Reviews Book Reviews Folk legend Vin, who was 69, passed away on June 6 2017 after undergoing heart surgery at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. More than 800 mourners packed St Mary’,s cathedral in Middlesbrough for his funeral Mass. He had begun working on All The Very Best! with the help of journalist Michael McGeary in 2014 and the first draft was completed a few days before Vin died. Just under 1,000 hardback copies were pre-ordered by folk fans as far away as Australia and Canada and have been shipped across the world from Loftus, North Yorkshire, by Vin’,s wife, Pat. A second hardback print run is now on sale, along with the third batch of paperbacks. The book has a five-star Amazon rating and topped the online retailer’,s Biographies of Folk Musicians chart. Born in South Bank, Middlesbrough, on November 20 1947, Vin became known as the funniest man on the worldwide folk scene. But while his patter was hilarious, his songs were often deadly serious, tackling issues from unemployment in the North- East to oppression and injustice wherever he saw it in the world. He recorded 12 studio albums and three live albums and was the subject of a full- length feature film, Teesside Troubadour. CATHOLIC FOLK LEGEND’,S AUTOBIOGRAPHY SELLS OUT AFTER TOPPING AMAZON CHARTS He was the first British folk artist to tour Australia and he played to packed out venues across the globe, attending Mass each Sunday wherever he found himself. In 2001 he was named Best Live Act at the 2001 BBC Folk Awards and received an honorary degree from Teesside University. But he was equally proud of the Benemerenti medal he was awarded for his work for Life, for which he performed an annual fundraiser Vin was also shunned by elements of the mainstream folk world because of his outspoken views on the issue of abortion, but he refused to be silenced, even at considerable cost to his career. In the book, Vin says: “,I`m a Catholic and happy that way. My religion means a lot to me and I have confirmed my membership of the Church in adulthood. I love the painting The Light of the World. Victorian artist William Holman Hunt depicts Christ standing outside a closed door, holding a lantern. “,To me, the message is that you have to welcome Jesus into your life –, he won’,t force his way in. The more I open that door, the more I find out what it`s all about.”, In 1983, Vin recorded an album of pro-life songs, Little Innocents, and donated the proceeds to the charity Life. He continued to write and sing pro-life songs throughout his career, even though some folk clubs and festivals refused to book him. Vin’,s son Louis, who has managed the project together with his mam, Pat, said: “,It’,s been lovely to hear the positive comments from fans, many saying it’,s like listening to Dad talking to them through the pages of the book. “,The book truly captures Dad’,s spirit and his outlook on life and we’,re really proud of the way it’,s turned out.”, All The Very Best! includes many previously unseen photos from Vin’,s life and contributions from some of Vin’,s friends and admirers from the folk world, including Tom Paxton, Loudon Wainwright III, Eric Bogle, Christy Moore, Mike Harding, Barbara Dixon and Jasper Carrott, as well as from fans and the people who knew Vin best. The book is available in hardback, paperback and ebook editions from vingarbutt.com .
