The Centre enables some of the most vulnerable people in the community take back some control over their lives and find a new dignity. As Police and Crime Commissioner I also note the way the Centre diverts some from a way of life that might eas, ily lead them into crime , which is why they received some funding from the Commissioner`s Grant Scheme. “,For the same reason I also strongly support their efforts to build a residen, tial Centre that will complement the work of the Centre.", The Centre, situated in Sheffield, pro, vides support and advice as a full day care opportunity for adults aged 18,65 years. April 2015 HALLAM ,NEWS Page Four Travelling in the Holy Land is al, ways special but this trip with Sr Susan was partic, ularly so. Our trips to the holy sites were arranged so that as far as possible we were not swamped and dis, tracted by other pilgrim groups. Our Masses and services were private and the homilies of Fr Michael focussed our minds in a meaningful way on biblical events and their wider significance. I n a modern context we saw the realities of the po, litical situation illustrating the plight of Pales, tinian Arabs as a whole, and of Christians in particular. There are injustices which may not be ignored or airbrushed away as happens on so many tours, but which call for action and support for the op, pressed on our return home. This was probably our last visit to Palestine. It was a happy trip and from our point of view could not have been bettered. S r Carmel Reynolds SM shares the events which began the Year of Consecrated Life in our Diocese. “,On 2 February, Candlemas Day, all roads led to Blessed Trinity Church, Wickersley where Fr Sexton and Fr Hurst opened the doors of their church to us with true hospitality. Here the Religious of the Diocese gathered to celebrate the opening of this special Year of Consecrated Life. Weather, wise it was a day out of heaven. Each Congregation of Religious came with a symbolically decorated candle which spoke of their Charism, their History and their Mission. While the Carmelite Sisters of Kirk Edge were unable to attend, a kind courier stepped in. They sent on a beautifully decorated candle with their story and prayers to accompany it. “,The Mass of Candlemas/Presentation of Our Lord in the Temple was cele, brated at noon with Bishop Ralph as chief celebrant. While everyone car, ried a lighted candle, the entry proces, sion was led by the Religious of the Diocese, each carrying their specially decorated Congregational candle. Fol, lowing the Religious, were the Priests who came in goodly numbers and Bishop Ralph –, all carried along by the exuberant music and singing of ‘,The Light of Christ’,... And what a joy it was to process into a packed church with many local parishioners, people from Deanery Parishes together with Lay Associate Groups and friends from afar. There was joy in abundance all around. “,Bishop Ralph in his inspirational homily drew an analogy between the gospel account of Jesus in the Temple and all those groups who were symbol, ically represented through Simeon and Anna –, Mary and Joseph , the people of God. In Jesus, everyone experienced a ‘,life changing’, encounter with Grace. Consecrated People continue to meet Jesus through the living out of their Charism in the Temple of the Church as they serve God’,s people wherever they are called to do so. “,These were most encouraging words too for the people present in the con, gregation as they too are some of the many faithful who work tirelessly in the many ‘,vineyards of the Lord’, throughout the Diocese. Reiterating the words of Pope Francis, Bishop Ralph reminded Consecrated people that they were called to live their lives in gratitude for the many graces of the past, with passion in the present, and with hope for the future. “,At the end of a joyful Liturgy we cele, brated together with friends over a cuppa and some tasty bites. We finally departed Wickersley with a new spring in our steps as we look towards em, bracing all that this Year of Consecra, tion offers us. May Mary, the first disciple of the Lord, continue to guide us, so that we give generously of our, selves wherever we hear the call of the Lord.”, Hallam Diocese Initiates the Year of Consecrated Li fe Hallam Diocese Initiates the Year of Consecrated Li fe Parish group from St Mary’,s, High Green, join in the celebrations A group of pilgrims from St Mary’,s Catholic High School, Chesterfield recently visited the Holy Land with Sr Susan Richert PBVM, the school’,s Chaplain. Here are the thoughts of some of the pilgrims. To bear witness by walking in the footsteps of our Lord in today`s troubled Holy Land was deeply moving and pertinent. We made new friends and shared a journey in faith that was thoroughly enjoyable, deeply spiritual and ex, tremely educational. The pilgrimage helped to reinforce our faith and to gain an understanding of the plight of the Palestinians and the Palestinian Christians in particular. It was a wonderful experience, further enhanced by the impeccable organisation and care on your part that went into the whole pilgrimage. I cannot fully describe the wonderful experience I had on this Pilgrimage to the Holy Land. I feel that I have been very privileged that I have had the opportunity to visit the holy sites and where Jesus walked. I was quite overwhelmed with the many experiences. I have had both tears and laughter. Our fellow pilgrims also made you aware of how diverse we are. They were wonderful to be with and helped make this trip something I will never forget. I shared this experience with my wife who accompanied me on the pilgrimage. Prior to going I was not really sure what to expect, however the experience has left me spiri, tually renewed and feeling that my faith has never been stronger. I hope to go back in two years and would recom, mend this experience to all Christians and particularly colleagues who work in Faith schools. A wonderful experience that I will always remember and cherish for the rest of my life. You have to visit the Holy Land to fully appreciate the full extent of this journey. PILGRIMAGE TO PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY LAND THE HOLY LAND Visiting St Martha’,s Centre in Bethlehem Visiting St Martha’,s Centre in Bethlehem Sr Susan said, “,As part of St Mary’,s pilgrimage to the Holy Land, the group, made up of staff, parents, friends, parishioners associated with St Mary’,s, visited St Martha’,s. We took with us donations, wool, cot, tons, medicines, toiletries, gloves and scarves. Listening to Laila, the founder of the centre, and meeting the ladies and those who worked at the centre was a very moving experience. We are grateful to all those who gave us donations and items to take with us. “,We are now beginning remote preparations for February, half, term 2017. April 2015 HALLAM ,NEWS Page Six St Thomas of Canterbury School has been selected to become a National Teaching School. A number of Y7 pupils from both Notre Dame High School and All Saints Catholic High School volunteered to help host the event after taking part in the Big Sing experience last year as Y6s, and being eager to experience it again. The day was split into two halves, in the morning the fantastic team of mu, sicians from CJM prepared the pupils for the liturgy, which took place in the afternoon. A group of pupils were also taken to learn a liturgical dance which became part of the afternoon liturgy. During lunchtime a group of Notre Dame Students from Year 9 volun, teered to run activities on the yard for up to 250 pupils at a time , no mean feat! The primary pupils really en, joyed the activities though, and the sunshine and fresh air helped them to run off some of the excitement of the morning! Thanks to all the staff at Notre Dame who made the day possible and the CJM team for leading a wonderful, memorable day. Year 6 children from St Patrick’,s Voluntary Academy were just one of the groups who had a fantastic day out at the Big Sing.

Ray Morrisroe,as the parishioner who knew Fr Martin longest, from his time as parish priest of Our Lady of Lour, des, Hackenthorpe, paid tribute to Fr Martin. They have a common interest in classical music and have enjoyed many debates about the relative mer, its of Rachmaninov and Mozart. They also share an enthusiasm for “,Dad’,s Army”,. Fr Martin’,s first career was in music, having graduated from the Royal Col, lege of Music. He was an accompanist and later a teacher of music in several schools. During his time at St John Southwood School in Preston he re, alised he had a calling to the priest, hood. His journey to the priesthood was a long one, first being received into the Catholic Church in his youth, he went to the Beda College, Rome in 1975 and was ordained at St Cuthbert’,s, Brad, ford by Bishop Wheeler of Leeds in 1979. He moved to be assistant to Canon Michael O’, Sullivan at Sacred Heart, Hillsborough and also served at St Paul’,s, Grimethorpe. Fr Martin was parish priest at Goldthorpe and Our Lady of Lourdes, Hackenthorpe, followed by Woodlands and finally Dronfield in 2001. Fr Martin was in, trigued by the many places he worked in that had names ending in Thorpe. Listening to a Radio 4 programme he discovered it means village, particu, larly a Norse or Viking settlement. During his 14 years in Dronfield, Ray Morrisroe has been Fr Martin’,s “,Right Hand Man”,. Many other parishioners have been a great support to Fr Mar, tin, especially in the last two years of ill health. The parishioners are also grateful to the priests of the Chesterfield Deanery for the fact that they have been able to celebrate Mass every weekend and are delighted to welcome Fr Terry Doherty as resident priest. As Ray said, we will call on Fr Martin on our days out in the beautiful Der, byshire Dales. Ray concluded his trib, ute by paraphrasing the Biblical verse, “,Well done thou good and faithful ser, vant, relax and enjoy your well earned rest.”, Pictured above left to right with Fr Martin (seated) are Bishop Ralph, Fr Terry Doherty and Ray Morrisroe at the celebration after the farewell Mass. He was invited to join them for a pie and pea supper followed by the oppor, tunity to share his favourite music and also his life story. During the evening he was interviewed by Vincent Green, one of the parishioners,[ in the style of Kirsty Young] and revealed that he is a great fan of The Seekers, so we en, joyed hearing one of his favourite tunes –, ‘,The Carnival is Over.’, The music the Bishop selected to take on his desert island was enjoyed by all and those who knew the songs sang along. The Bishop said that along with the Bible he would like to take a copy of ‘,The Wind in the Willows’,, an, other favourite of his. This was a charity event organised by the the Makeni Trust, who were rais, ing money to help people rebuild their lives in Sierra Leone after the Ebola virus has been eliminated. The evening was a great success and £,1,170 was raised. A big thank you to Bishop Ralph for taking part. Bishop Ralph was interviewed by Vincent Green Fr Colum Kelly visits Hallam Ascent: a report by Ro se Krzyz Fr Colum Kelly visits Hallam Ascent: a report by Ro se Krzyz T he ice on the pavement did not put off over thirty Hallam Ascent parishioners, and their guests, from travelling to St Francis of Assisi parish on Sandygate Road, Sheffield to listen to Fr Colum Kelly, Port Chap, lain at Immingham Docks, talk about his work with the Apostleship of the Sea. Fr Colum spoke about the devastating effects of the surge that flooded a large section of the buildings at the docks last year. Many in the audience were not aware of the extent of the damage, nor that it took ten months to repair and re,open the centre. During that time Fr Colum did not rest from his work. His mission became `mobile` in more senses that one. He managed to fund, raise to buy a number of mobile hubs that he could lend to the ships in port so that sea farers could still communi, cate with their families, and he contin, ued his visits to the ships in port from his van. Against the advice of others, he continued to live on the first floor of the centre, above the mud and devas, tation below. This allowed him to be on hand while salvage and restoration work was carried out, especially when the workers came to strip the chapel. Fr Colum insisted that the statue of Our Lady stayed to oversee proce, dures. The talk was accompanied by a Power Point show that helped the au, dience appreciate the extent of the damage. Tantalisingly Fr Colum did not show any pictures of what the cen, tre looks like now after the restoration has been completed. This will have to wait until members of Hallam Ascent visit the docks in July. The group can, not wait! The other purpose for Fr Colum`s visit was to collect the donations of clothes, toiletries, writing equipment and money from all over the Hallam dio, cese. The group was overwhelmed by the generosity of parishioners, and would like to thank everyone who gave sweaters, toiletries, sweets and money for the Apostleship of the Sea in Im, mingham. It was just as well that Fr Colum had travelled in his large van to come down to Sheffield! Fr Colum also received the results of a collection that amounted to £,365. After the talk the group had a chance to talk with Fr Colum more informally over a cup of tea and some cake. All were left with a great sense of grati, tude for the work that Fr Colum does for these seafarers, whose work is so essential to maintain our lifestyle and who yet, sometimes, live in conditions few can imagine. The group look for, ward to their visit to the refurbished centre in July. April 2015 HALLAM ,NEWS Page Ten St Vincent’,s Panto Players recently presented their twenty, sixth pantomime, Robin Hood and the Magna Carta, at St Vincent’,s Church, Crookes, Sheffield. This unique theatrical expe, rience marked the 800th anniversary of the sign, ing of the Magna Carta, but apart from that it has to be acknowledged that the story line did play rather fast and loose with historical facts. Robin Hood and his merry men were pitted against Prince John, the Sheriff of Hallam and their cronies (Boo!) in their attempt to get the Prince to sign the Magna Carta granting rights and freedoms to the people. A wide variety of characters appeared along the way, including Doctor Who and a reformed Dalek, Little Red Riding Hood, Elsa and Olaf from Frozen, Gandalf and Bilbo from the Hobbit, and King Richard. Chaos ensued, the Sherwood Forest creatures sang a song, an audience member received the traditional custard pie, all accompanied by jokes that must have been even older than the Magna Carta, before it all ended happily ever after. The ‘,Charlie Gardiner Award’, for loyal service to the pantomime, created in honour of a former parish priest, went this year to Louise Finnigan who has been involved since the first year. £,1600 was raised, to be split between the St Justin So, ciety and Fr Peter Shekelton. A key feature of our diocesan pilgrimage to Lour, des is the way in which pilgrims who have signif, icant medical conditions, or need additional support, stay with other pilgrims in hotels in Lourdes (in specially adapted rooms and with specialist equipment where necessary) placing them at the heart of the pilgrimage. Every stage of the pilgrimage is planned in great detail with these pilgrims in mind –, eg the boarding of the aircraft and allocation of seats, and a wheelchair accessible coach between Lourdes airport and the hotels. All these practical arrangements, however, de, pend on the availability of volunteer helpers who travel on the pilgrimage and give assistance on the journey and throughout the pilgrimage in Lourdes. Helpers offer their service to others in a spirit of love and generosity. Pope Francis frequently refers to service of others, and we have all seen images of him living out that service in his ac, tions. In Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel) Pope Francis reminds us that the Gospel tells us to “,run the risk of a face,to,face encounter with others, with their physical presence which chal, lenges us, with their pain and their pleas, with their joy which infects us in our close and contin, uous interaction”,, saying that “,true faith is insep , arable from self, giving, from membership in the community, from service, from reconciliation with others”,. Travelling as a helper on pilgrim, age to Lourdes is one way of doing this. Helpers provide service in a wide variety of ways. Doctors and nurses provide the medical support that is required, and use their professional skills in the service of others. We are very fortunate to have five doctors travelling this year, but ur, gently need more nurses who hold a current reg, istration. We are also fortunate that over 200 young people join us on pilgrimage, travelling with their schools, and they will provide a large part of the practical support to pilgrims and help push wheelchairs to and from the various services and in the processions. In addition to the medical team and youth, how, ever, we also depend heavily on volunteer male and female helpers. Their help is particularly important on the journey and in the hotel. This can include listening and chatting, helping dur, ing the services and processions, and assisting a pilgrim who has poor mobility or needs help with washing and dressing. To volunteer as a male or female helper you don’,t need any experience or qualification. All that is required is that you are willing to help during the pilgrimage, are in reasonable health, and under, take (or already hold) an enhanced DBS check with the Diocese. A preparation day will be held for all helpers who are booked on the pilgrimage on 9 May, where information will be shared on “,moving and handling”,, safeguarding and an out, line of the pilgrimage given Would you consider travelling on this year’,s pil, grimage as a helper? For further details please contact Fr Pat O’,Con, nor on 01302 853937 or Rose Shay on 07724 650066. DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY DIVINE Mercy Sunday is celebrated on the Octave of Easter (the Sunday after Easter Sunday.) It celebrates the Divine Mercy of Christ as re, vealed to St Maria Faustina Kowalsa, who was canonised by Pope John Paul II. Mike Mur, phy, of our Diocese, re, lates his experience of Divine Mercy Sunday. “,I have to say that the sig, nificance of Divine Mercy Sunday (the Second Sunday of Easter) had completely passed me by. I still thought of it as Low Sunday, whatever that meant. “,Al, though I think that I had heard of St Faustina, it was not until I went to Mass at a church in Southern Spain that was dedicated to the Divine Mercy that I learned of how Jesus had appeared to Faustina and chose her as the “,Secretary”, of his Mercy so that she could tell the world about his great mes, sage. It was during these apparitions in the 1930s that Jesus asked that the Second Sunday of Easter should be dedicated to his Divine Mercy. By virtue of a Decree issued on 5 May 2000 by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacra, ments, the Holy See pro, claimed the Second Sunday of Easter also as Divine Mercy Sunday. “, The Image of Divine Mercy , Jesus appeared to Faustina many times during the 1930’,s and on his in, struction she recorded the details of these apparitions in her diary. Jesus showed her an image of himself with two rays of light emanating from his heart. The pale ray stands for water which makes souls righteous and the red ray stands for…,. his blood that issued forth from the very depths of my tender mercy when my agonised heart was opened by a lance on the cross. Jesus asked that the image should be painted with the words ‘, Jesus, I trust in you ’,. “, Feast of the Divine Mercy , So what is the sig, nificance of Divine Mercy Sunday? Well, according to the diaries of St Faustina, Jesus said I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of my tender mercy are open. I pour out an ocean of graces upon those souls who ap, proach the fount of my mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall ob, tain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment…, “, The Chaplet , In a vision to St Faustina Jesus re, vealed a powerful prayer that he wanted everyone to say (see below). Prayed on rosary beads it may be said at any time but particularly at 3pm on Fridays ( the hour of great mercy for the whole world ) whilst contemplating the Sorrowful Mysteries.“, The Novena , Jesus specif, ically requested that the chaplet be said as a novena on the nine days before the Feast of Divine Mercy begin, ning on Good Friday with the following petitions for each day, Day 1 for all sin, ners, Day 2 for priests and religious, Day 3 for the souls of the devout and the faith, ful, Day 4 for non, believers and those who do not know, Day 5 for heretics and schis, matics, Day 6 for the meek and humble and for chil, dren, Day 7 for the souls of those who glorify Christ’,s Mercy, Day 8 for the souls in purgatory, Day 9 for the souls of those who have be, come lukewarm or indiffer, ent in their faith. “,It can be prayed at any time but praying the novena as a conclusion to Lenten preparation seems to be completely fitting. “, The Chaplet : First say: O Blood and Water which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in You. Then say the Our Father, Hail Mary and the Apostles Creed. Then on the Our Fa, ther bead say “,Eternal Fa, ther I offer You the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the world.”, On the Hail Mary beads say “,For the sake of His Sorrowful Passion have mercy on us, have mercy on us and on the whole world”,. Conclude each ‘,decade’, with the words “,Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One have mercy on us and on the whole world. The closing prayer after the five decades, “,Eternal God in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us that in difficult moments we might not de, spair nor become despon, dent but with great confidence submit ourselves to Your Holy Will which is Love and Mercy itself.”, When the prayers have been memorised the Chaplet could be said whilst medi, tating on the Sorrowful Mysteries. “,*Words in italic are the words of Jesus as recorded in St Faustina’,s diaries.”, Robin Hood Wrote The Magna Carta? –, Oh Yes He Did!
