It is a follow up to the 1998 gathering with Pope John Paul II at St Peter’,s, Rome, right here in London. On that occasion the Pope said: “,I often had occasion to stress that there is no conflict or opposition in the Church between the institutional dimension and the charismatic dimension of which movements are a significant expression. Both are co­,essential to the divine constitution of the Church founded by Jesus, because they both help to make the mystery of Christ and his saving work present in the world.”, This meeting will show in various ways how the movements are a gift at the service of the Church today. It is open to all, to those already belonging to a movement, as well as those who would like to know more about these new charisms sent by the Holy Spirit. The all day event takes place on Saturday 9 November in the Methodist Hall, Westminster, SW1H 9NH. It will be a day of witness, prayer, mime, music, drama, talks, testimonies, and film. Archbishop Vincent Nichols and Cardinal Cormac Murphy O’,Connor, will both be present. Speakers are Edwin Fawcett, Steve Murray and David Wells. The organisers include Catholic Charismatic Renewal, Focolare, Youth 2000 and members of eighteen ecclesial movements and com­, munities. Tickets are just £,12. For further information see www.manystream­, soneriver.org Recognizing that Blessed John XXIII and John Paul II have widespread reputations for holiness and that years of studying their lives and actions have proven their exceptional virtue, Pope Francis announced he would declare his two predecessors saints at a single ceremony April 27.The pope made the announcement Sept. 30 at the end of an “,ordinary public con­, sistory,”, a gathering of cardinals and promoters of the sainthood causes of the two late popes. The consistory took place in the context of a prayer service in Latin and included the reading of brief biographies of the two sainthood candi­, dates. Blessed John Paul, known as a globe­, trotter who made 104 trips outside Italy, served as pope from 1978 to 2005 and was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on Divine Mercy Sunday, May 1, 2011. Blessed John XXIII, known partic­, ularly for convoking the Second Vatican Council, was pope from 1958 to 1963, Blessed John Paul beatified him in 2000. Asked by reporters if retired Pope Benedict would partici­, pate in the canonization ceremony, Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, Vatican spokesman, told reporters it was possible, but given the retired pope’,s preference for staying out of the public eye, he could not say for sure. Since the beginning of his pontificate in March, Pope Francis has emphasized God’,s mercy and readiness to forgive those who recognize their need for pardon. He told reporters on the flight from Brazil that Pope John Paul’,s promotion of Divine Mercy Sunday showed his intuition that a new “,age of mercy”, was needed in the church and the world. Asked on the plane to describe the two late popes, Pope Francis said Blessed John was “,a bit of the ‘,country priest,’, a priest who loves each of the faithful and knows how to care for them, he did this as a bishop and as a nuncio.”, He was holy, patient, had a good sense of humour and, especially by calling the Second Vatican Council, was a man of courage, Pope Francis said. “,He was a man who let himself be guided by the Lord.”, As for Blessed John Paul, Pope Francis told the reporters on the plane, “,I think of him as ‘,the great missionary of the church,”, because he was “,a man who proclaimed the Gospel everywhere.”, Two New Papal Saints Copy deadline for the December 2013 Edition is October 31 It’,s a lovely thought, once we’,re all on holiday and safely installed in warm houses…, but if this winter brings us the kind of traffic­,paralysing thick snowfalls that we have become more used to in recent years, it can cause much incon­, venience, at the very least. One aspect is that Church meetings and events may have to be cancelled at short notice. To make things worse, the people who could answer the “,Is it still on?”, queries, or put a cancellation up on a website, are themselves often prevented from getting to their offices where the work phone and computer are! So Brin Dunsire, who manages the Diocesan website, is again offering the Snow Alerts service for short­,notice cancellations of meetings.
